The poverty rate in Mozambique is estimated at around 58%, which means that more than half of the population lives below the poverty line. This reality is even more worrying in rural areas, where around 70% of the population lives below the poverty line.
Poverty in Mozambique is deeply linked to the lack of access to basic services, such as education, health, drinking water and sanitation. Most people in these areas do not have access to basic services and information needed to improve their lives. Furthermore, the lack of employment and economic development opportunities means that many people have to resort to informal work and low wages to survive.
